Come and See: Overrated Trauma Porn?
Okay, so I finally caved and watched Come and See. Everyone's always saying it's the most harrowing war film ever made, blah blah blah. And yeah, it's bleak. Really bleak. But honestly? I think people get off a little too much on how 'difficult' it is to watch. Like, enduring something awful somehow makes you a better, more enlightened person? I'm not buying it. Look, I get it, the realism is intense. The kid, Florya, goes from wide-eyed to completely shell-shocked in, like, two hours of screentime. And the scene where the villagers get locked in the church... yeah, messed up. But did we need to see every single agonizing second? There's a difference between showing the brutality of war and just wallowing in misery. At a certain point, it feels exploitative. It feels like it wanted to hurt me, and that's not necessarily good cinema, y'know? And don't even get me started on the, ahem, 'philosophical' ending with Florya shooting at the portrait of Hitler. Like, wow, so deep. War is bad. Thanks movie. Groundbreaking stuff. I'm not saying it's a bad film, per se. The cinematography is undeniable, and the acting is pretty phenomenal. But it's definitely not the life-changing experience everyone makes it out to be. More like a cinematic endurance test. Maybe I'm just too desensitized, or maybe I just prefer my war films with a little more… I don't know, actual narrative drive? Give me Apocalypse Now any day. At least that movie had some gonzo energy to it, instead of just pure, unadulterated despair. I feel like I need a shower after watching that film, and not in a good way haha. Anyone else feel this way? Or am I officially canceled?
