'Come and See': Overrated Trauma Porn?

Okay, I just finished watching 'Come and See' (1985). And look, I get it. It's supposed to be this harrowing depiction of war, blah blah blah. Everyone raves about how 'realistic' and 'important' it is. But honestly? I found it mostly just... exhausting. Like, yeah, war is bad. Thanks for the three-hour reminder, director guy (whoever he is, I'm not even looking it up). The whole 'child's perspective' thing with Florya (that kid looked like he aged about 50 years in the span of the movie) felt less insightful and more manipulative. We get it, innocence lost, trauma, the horrors of the Nazi invasion. But did we really need that endlessly long sequence of the villagers being herded into the church? I felt like I was being emotionally bludgeoned over the head. And Glasha? She might as well have been a cardboard cutout. I didn't feel anything for her or their relationship. I might be a sociopath. Don't get me wrong, the cinematography was undeniably impressive in parts. Some of those wide shots of the burned-out landscape were genuinely disturbing. But overall, the film felt self-indulgent. It seemed more focused on inflicting pain on the audience than actually saying anything meaningful about the war or the human condition. Like, I could get the same effect by watching a YouTube compilation of war footage, and save myself about three hours. I am just tired of these movies that think that showing endless suffering is profound. Maybe I'm just too jaded. Maybe I'm missing something. But to me, 'Come and See' felt less like a profound artistic statement and more like a really, really well-made exercise in misery. Anyone else agree, or am I alone on this island of contrarianism? (Probably alone, knowing my luck.)
