Police Academy 2: Still silly after all these years!
Okay, so I watched 'Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment' with the kids last night. I know, I know, it's a bit of a throwback, but my husband swore it was harmless fun and, honestly, sometimes you just need some cheesy laughs. It definitely delivered on the cheesy part! Carey Mahoney is still a goofball, and the supporting cast is just as ridiculous as ever. The whole Zed gang subplot is… well, it's of its time, let's just say that. Some of the humour is super outdated (and honestly, a little questionable viewed through today's lens), so we skipped over a few bits, but overall, the kids were giggling. Definitely not high art, lol. There were some moments that really stood out, though. The entire loudspeaker scene with Hightower and the moped gang? Still hilarious! I also got a kick out of Tackleberry's, uh, enthusiasm for his job (even if it's totally over the top). Of course, it's predictable and silly and the plot is barely there but, after a long day, it was just the right level of mindless entertainment. My youngest actually wants to try to make the super-loud whistle sound that Zed does, wish me luck. Honestly, it's more of a nostalgia trip than a truly great film. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're prepared for some very dated jokes and situations. Think of it as a time capsule of 80s comedy – some parts are gold, some parts are… definitely stuck in the past. I'd probably only show this with older kids, maybe 10 and up? There's some stuff that's not suitable for really young ones, and some of the jokes might just fly right over their heads anyway. It was really interesting to see how movies have changed over time. So, yeah, 'Police Academy 2'. Go in expecting silliness and a few cringeworthy moments, and you might just have a good time. Just pre-empt the kids' questions about why everyone's hair is so huge, okay? 😉
