Is "After Hours" a Lost Sci-Fi Classic?

Okay, hear me out, fellow world-builders! I just re-watched "After Hours" and I can't shake the feeling that it's secretly a low-key sci-fi flick. I know, I know, it's billed as a dark comedy, but think about it: Paul Hackett enters this totally alien landscape of SoHo after dark. It's a world governed by bizarre, illogical rules, populated by characters who are practically archetypes of urban weirdness. It's like he stumbled into a pocket dimension! Remember the punk club scene with the plaster-covered woman? That whole vibe just screamed dystopian future to me. And the way people kept misunderstanding him, the escalating paranoia... it felt like he was trapped in some Kafkaesque simulation. It wasn't just stressful, it was surreal. Is it just me or did anyone else think that maybe he was a lab rat in some social experiment? Or, even better, some elaborate, super-advanced VR game gone wrong? I get that the immediate reading is a commentary on yuppie anxiety in the 80s, but I'm telling you, there's something deeper bubbling beneath the surface. And, honestly, the lack of explanation just adds to the mystery. Like, who were those guys looking for the sculpture? Where did all the money come from? This is the kind of stuff that usually gets fully explained with detailed lore dumps but that's not what happens here. It's all just.. left to your imagination. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that's what I do! I'm interested if anyone else ever had similar thoughts while watching this flick. Also, who directed this? I forgot to look but I bet they are into writing, too.
