After Hours - Am I the Only One Who Finds This Movie Hilariously Stressful?
Okay, horror peeps, I need to know – am I alone in thinking "After Hours" is, like, the ultimate anxiety nightmare disguised as a dark comedy? I just rewatched it last night, and I'm still buzzing. Griffin Dunne is brilliant as poor Paul, just trying to, I don't know, get laid? And everything just spirals out of control. Seriously, every single choice he makes sends him deeper into this crazy downtown labyrinth. What REALLY gets me is the Susan character (Rosanna Arquette). Is she supposed to be this siren luring him into chaos, or is she just as much a victim of this weird night? The whole plaster of paris thing is super creepy, and then the whole 'is she dead or not' ambiguity...UGH. And the punk club scene with the shaved heads? That whole sequence is just perfection in unsettling absurdity. It's not scary in a jump-scare kind of way, but it's got this pervasive dread that just sticks with you. I think what really strikes me about this movie is how easily it could happen to anyone. Maybe not the exact same circumstances, but that feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, just trying to get home, and everything conspiring against you...that's legit terrifying. Has anyone else felt this way watching "After Hours"? What scenes freaked you out the most? Seriously, let's dissect this thing because I'm still trying to process it. Also, side not... Is it just me or does the director never get enough credit for this one?
