OMG, Blood Simple is NOT Your Average Romance (Thank Goodness!)
Okay, people, I just watched "Blood Simple" (1985), and I am…confused. And also, kinda thrilled? Like, someone told me it was a neo-noir thriller, and they weren't kidding. But I went in expecting, y'know, maybe a little bit of romance based on a recommendation from a friend. Turns out the romance is only there to fuel a whole lot of bad decisions and even worse luck. Seriously, who knew adultery could lead to such a darkly comedic, over-the-top mess? The Coen brothers (yes, I googled it, I didn't know directors existed back then, lol) really outdid themselves with the tension. Frances McDormand, bless her heart, plays Abby, the wife having the affair. I was rooting for her to get away from her awful husband, Marty (Dan Hedaya – the face you LOVE to hate), but girl, your taste in men needs work. Then there's the private investigator, Visser (M. Emmet Walsh), who's basically a walking, talking embodiment of sleaze. The whole plot is set in motion when Marty hires Visser to murder Abby and her lover, Ray (John Getz). But of course, things don't go according to plan. I swear, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I gotta say, the scene where Abby's trying to escape… I won't spoil it, but it's pure nightmare fuel. Seriously, the sound design alone is enough to make you jump out of your skin. The use of shadows and light adds to the overall creepy vibe. It's like, you know it's a movie, but you can't help but feel like you're right there with her, trapped in that godforsaken bar in the middle of nowhere. Overall, "Blood Simple" is definitely not your typical romantic comedy (duh, Lauren!). It's twisted, it's brutal, and it's unexpectedly hilarious in a very dark way. If you're looking for something that'll keep you guessing and maybe make you rethink your life choices, give it a watch. Just don't expect a happy ending, folks. Definitely don't expect rainbows and unicorns. Maybe just a lot of blood, sweat, and tears... and a whole lot of Texan drawl.
