Weird Science...is it really a comedy?
Okay, horror/thriller peeps, I need to ask a question that's been bugging me for YEARS. I just re-watched "Weird Science" (1985) and I'm still not totally convinced it's just a straight-up comedy. Like, yeah, it's got tons of funny moments (Bill Paxton as Chet…iconic!), but there's this underlying CREEPY vibe that I can't shake. Think about it: two super awkward, bullied teens literally create a woman. That's… kinda messed up, right? And Lisa, as cool as she is, manipulates them constantly. Plus, the whole biker gang/nuclear missile thing felt weirdly dystopian and out of place for a fluffy teen flick. I feel like there is a LOT going on under the surface there. I also don't like how sexually aggressive they are with Lisa, I have always wondered if their 'creation' of a woman was a way of the director to objectify women. Am I the only one who sees this? Is there some hidden commentary on teenage loneliness and desperation, or am I just projecting my horror-loving brain onto what's supposed to be lighthearted 80s fare? Seriously, let me know your thoughts! Maybe I'm watching it through a warped lens, but I swear there's something deeply unsettling about the whole premise.
