Weird Science: More Than Just 80s Cringefest?
Okay, so I just watched "Weird Science" (1985) for the first time, and WOW, I have thoughts. First off, Anthony Michael Hall is a legend, even if his character, Gary, is kinda annoying. The whole premise is obviously ridiculous - two nerds basically invent the perfect woman on their computer. I mean, come on! But, BUT... hear me out. What if it's not just a horny teen fantasy? My theory is that Lisa isn't just about fixing Gary and Wyatt's social lives. She's a manifestation of their own potential? Think about it. She forces them to stand up for themselves, like when she crashes the party and they have to deal with Chet turning into a turd-monster (literally!). And she pushes them to be confident, something they clearly lack at the beginning. Maybe Lisa is really just their subconscious, helping them become the best versions of themselves. It's like, they needed someone to come in and shock them out of their awkwardness. I know, I know, it's probably a stretch. The movie is bonkers and definitely hasn't aged perfectly (some of the jokes are... yikes). But there's something about the ending, when Lisa just leaves (and Wyatt actually talks to a real girl!) that makes me think there's something deeper going on. It's like, she did her job, and now they're ready to actually live a normal life. Anyone else see it this way, or am I just reading way too much into this? I really need to watch it again. Maybe it was just the 80s hair spray talking.
