Fright Night (1985): Overrated Vampire Schmaltz?
Alright, alright, settle down, horror hounds. Before you sharpen your stakes and come after me, let's talk about 'Fright Night'. I just rewatched it, and... I dunno, I'm still not seeing the universal adoration. Look, Chris Sarandon is undeniably charismatic as Jerry Dandrige. He nails that suave-creepiness. But the rest? Meh. Charley? He's basically a whiny kid. And Evil Ed? Okay, Stephen Geoffreys goes FULL throttle, but sometimes it feels like he's in a completely different movie altogether, one where subtlety was banished. And don't even get me started on Amanda Bearse as Amy. I can't put my finger on it, but I just never bought her as Charley's girlfriend in the middle of the film. She's not bad, but the character is pretty bland. Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent is probably the strongest part, but even he falls into some pretty tired comedic tropes. The visual effects were decent for the time, I'll give it that, that bat transformation is memorable. But the whole 'believe me, he's a vampire!' plot is so predictable and drawn out. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here! Everyone treats it like it's some untouchable classic. I'm not saying it sucks, it's entertaining enough, especially if you're into that 80s cheese. But it is scary? Eh, not really. It's more…campy fun. I feel like people are blinded by nostalgia. Maybe I'm just dead inside, but I feel like the general praise is way overblown. Give me 'Near Dark' or even 'The Lost Boys' any day over 'Fright Night.' Anyone else feel this way, or am I alone on this island of reasonable (and possibly heretical) opinion? And yeah, I know, Tom Holland did a fine job directing. Doesn't mean I gotta pretend it's perfect.
