question

Out of Africa - OK, I have a burning question after my 800th rewatch...

Okay, so I'm Hannah, and I'm OBSESSED with Out of Africa. Like, I've seen it a ridiculous number of times. And I always notice something new. This time, it's got me completely stumped. It's about Denys Finch Hatton (swoon, seriously, who wouldn't fall for Redford in that role?) and Karen's relationship. We all know it's complicated, right? He's so independent and doesn't want to 'own' anything, including her. But there's this one scene, after they've been together for a while and she's clearly deeply in love...when he brings her the gramophone and they listen to Mozart. It feels like such an intimate, loving moment. But then, he's off again, doing his own thing. So here's my question: do you guys think Denys actually loved Karen? Or was he just using her for the companionship and the freedom to come and go as he pleased? I'm torn. Part of me sees the genuine affection in his eyes (Redford is a great actor, obvs!), but another part thinks he was just incapable of real commitment. What are your thoughts?? Anyone else think he was a bit of a jerk, even though he was ridiculously charming? Let me know what you think! Also random thought... anyone have a clue what kind of airplane he was flying? :D
