Okay, "Legend" (1985): Fantasy Eye Candy, But Is That Enough?
Alright, so I finally got around to watching "Legend" (the Tom Cruise one, obviously!). Visually? Absolutely stunning. Ridley Scott clearly went all out with the set design and the costumes. Seriously, the forest scenes are like stepping into a fairytale painting. And Tim Curry as Darkness? Iconic. He's terrifyingly sexy, if that makes any sense. Like, I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley, but I also wouldn't mind getting a closer look at those horns. But here's the thing, I'm a rom-com girl at heart, and plotlines matter to me! The story felt a little thin, you know? Pretty girl meets nature boy, bad guy wants to destroy the light, blah blah. Tom Cruise is... Tom Cruise. He's fine, perfectly serviceable, but he doesn't exactly set my heart aflutter in this role. Mia Sara as Princess Lili is gorgeous, but her character felt a bit underdeveloped. I wanted more from her! She just kinda wanders around looking ethereal until she needs to do something, which is kinda weak sauce. Honestly, if you're looking for a deep, thought-provoking fantasy movie, this ain't it. But if you want something visually beautiful to zone out to on a Sunday afternoon, with some impressive practical effects (before everything was CGI!), then "Legend" is worth a watch. Just don't expect a rom-com, or even a particularly compelling romance. Think of it as art to look at instead, then you won't be as disappointed, like I was! And someone PLEASE tell me Tim Curry knew how ridiculously amazing he looked the whole time. I swear, he was born to play a demon. Even if the movies plot isn't that amazing, he saves it. He's a movie-saving demon!
