Okay, I Have Thoughts About Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
Alright fellow horror nerds, I just finished my, like, fifth rewatch of A New Beginning, and I gotta say, this one gets a bad rap sometimes. I know, I know, it's arguably the least 'Jason' of all the Jason movies, but hear me out! First off, the kills are BRUTAL. Way more graphic than some of the others, and that poor couple in the woods? Yikes. I always feel bad for them, just looking for a little privacy. : What I find especially interesting this time is Tommy Jarvis. I've been thinking about his mental state throughout the film, and it's kinda heartbreaking. He's clearly traumatized, and everyone around him is just kinda dismissive? Like, yeah, he's acting out, but maybe SOMEONE should've offered him actual therapy instead of just shoving him in a halfway house. And let's be real, the whole Roy Burns reveal is a bit...clunky. But honestly, the sheer number of people just getting hacked to pieces makes up for it. Plus, Ethel Hubbard with her shotgun? Iconic. Also, did anyone else notice how many characters are just blatantly horny in this one? It's almost comical, and definitely adds to the 80s slasher vibe. I feel like it's even MORE over the top than usual for this series. I might be totally off base here, but I think it's a fun, if flawed, entry in the franchise. Definitely one I keep coming back to. One last thing - and maybe I'm just seeing things - but does Violet's Misfits shirt foreshadow anything? Like, her 'fitting in' with the victims? Or is it just a cool shirt? Let me know your thoughts!
