Okay, Okay...I Secretly Love The Jewel of the Nile (Don't Judge!)
Alright, horror hounds and thriller junkies, lemme confess something. I have a soft spot for... The Jewel of the Nile. I know, I know, it's not scary, it's not suspenseful, it's basically a rom-com adventure flick. But hear me out! I watched it again last night and it's just pure, cheesy 80s fun. Like, Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas have insane chemistry, and even though the plot is kinda ridiculous (Joan gets tricked into going to the Middle East by some sheik dude?), I'm always entertained. Seriously, that whole bit with the 'jewel' being a dude? Hilarious. And when they're trying to escape in that jet plane that's like, falling apart? Classic. I think what really gets me is the sheer absurdity of it all. It doesn't take itself seriously for ONE SECOND. It's just bright colors, silly situations, and Kathleen Turner being a total badass while still being charming. It's a palate cleanser after watching too many really dark movies, you know? Okay, so yeah, the villain is kinda cartoonish and some of the CGI is laughably bad by today's standards (that sandstorm at the end...oof). But it's all part of the charm! It’s not a good movie in the traditional sense, but it's just so enjoyable. I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone who's looking for a truly gripping thriller, but if you're in the mood for some mindless, feel-good entertainment, you can't go wrong. Anyone else secretly love this movie? Or am I totally alone in my 80s nostalgia? Let me know! Maybe recommend some other 'guilty pleasure' non-horror movies? Always looking for suggestions!
