Okay, "Jewel of the Nile" - Guilty Pleasure or Actually Good?

Alright fellow cinephiles, Priya here! So, I recently re-watched "The Jewel of the Nile" (1985), and I'm having some mixed feelings, which, honestly, is often the case with these kinds of adventure flicks. As you know, I'm all about world cinema, and this one definitely tries to look global, bouncing around the Middle East and whatnot. Anyone else find it kinda... dated in its portrayal? I mean, it's fun, sure, but some of the 'exotic' stuff feels a bit cringe now. My theory (and I'd love to hear if you agree!) is that the key to enjoying this film is to embrace the cheese. Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas have amazing chemistry, and that's really what carries the whole thing. The plot about Joan being tricked by that Arab dignitary (Omar, right?) is honestly pretty thin. But their banter, Danny DeVito's constant complaining... it's pure 80s gold. Plus, that scene where they're all escaping in the F-16 fighter jet? So ridiculous, but so awesome, remember that guys? What I'm wondering is, is it intentionally cheesy? Or were they just really bad at making serious action movies back then? I'm leaning towards the former. I think they knew they were making a fun, escapist adventure, and they just went for it. It's definitely not high art, but sometimes you just need a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, yeah? I find myself going back to it just for the fun of that era, the clothing styles were so ridiculous, I enjoy spotting that and laughing about it. So, yeah, my final thought is that "The Jewel of the Nile" is a flawed, but ultimately enjoyable, film. It's a product of its time, for sure, but it's also got a certain charm that's hard to resist. What do you all think? Am I being too lenient? Let me know your theories!
