Okay, "The Purple Rose of Cairo"... What WAS That?? (Mind Blown)

So, I just watched this movie, "The Purple Rose of Cairo." I'm going in blind on these older films, and honestly, I had no idea what I was getting into. This movie is directed by... someone? I don't even know! Anyway, the basic plot is about this woman, Cecilia, during the depression. She's a waitress and her life SUCKS, basically, and she escapes to the movies. Then, get this, one of the characters literally walks off the screen and into her life?!? Like, what?!?! I was totally hooked from that point on. I mean, at first I thought my TV was glitching, haha. But then it just got more and more bonkers. It's like a rom-com, but with a MAJORLY bizarre twist. Tom Baxter (the character who comes to life) is sweet and charming, but also totally clueless about real life. And then the actual Tom Baxter shows up from Hollywood to try and fix things? My head is still spinning. Mia Farrow was fantastic, by the way. I really felt for her character. I was wondering, though, did anyone else find the ending kind of sad, even though it's maybe supposed to be hopeful? Cecilia chooses the 'real' actor, but then like, is she really happy at the end? It kind of felt like she was just choosing another escape. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that last shot of her in the movie theater felt...empty. And what about Jeff Daniels playing both Tom's? He was so good! How did they do that?? Anyway, I'm still processing everything. But I'm definitely adding this to my 'recommend' list. It's unlike anything I've ever seen, and I’m not sure if that's a good or bad thing but gosh darn I enjoyed it. Has anyone got any other recommendations of films like this? Need more off the wall ideas!
