Okay, "The Purple Rose of Cairo" - Whut?
So last night we put on "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and...wow. I can see why my friend kept hyping it! First off, Mia Farrow is just so perfectly cast as Cecilia. You totally feel her desperation and how much she just NEEDS that escape into the movies. Like, seriously, who hasn't wanted to just crawl into their favorite film when life gets too hard? And then Tom Baxter steps off the screen! I was honestly kinda creeped out at first, ngl. The whole breaking-the-fourth-wall thing is done so well though. Jeff Daniels does an amazing job playing both Tom and Gil. But honestly, I felt so bad for Gil, the real actor, stuck in Hollywood freaking out lol. The scene where Tom walks around freaking out because he isn't scripted was...wild. I don't want to spoil it, but the ending...oof. I was rooting so hard for Cecilia to just go with Tom (or even Gil!), but I guess the whole point is that those kinds of happy endings are only in the movies. And then she goes to see another one! Broke my heart a little. Anyone else feel that way about the ending? Or am I just a hopeless romantic? Also, does anyone know who directed this? I tried to google it while we were watching, and I swear it wasn't on the movie poster or anything. Whoever it was, they were a genius!
