"Enemy Mine" - Anyone else tear up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME?!
Okay, so, "Enemy Mine". I know it's an older movie, and maybe not the most visually stunning by today's standards, but it gets me right in the feels. My kids were asking to watch some sci-fi the other day, something beyond Star Wars (which we all adore, naturally!), and I thought this might be a good one. It's relatively tame content-wise for older kids, maybe 10+, with the main themes being tolerance and family... but I always forget how emotional it can get! Specifically, I'm thinking about the scene where Willis Davidge (Dennis Quaid) delivers Zammis' baby... I mean, come on! And then, years later, when he's trying to get Zammis recognized as a legal citizen on Earth. I'm not crying, you're crying! My youngest was a little confused about the whole gender thing but we talked about it and it was a good opportunity for a teachable moment. It's just such a powerful story about overcoming prejudice and finding common ground, even with someone you've been taught to hate. But I was wondering, does anyone else find the ending particularly bittersweet? It's happy, yes, but also very poignant knowing Zammis is gone and Davidge is left with a whole new familial responsibility. Does it resonate with you? Or am I just being overly sensitive, lol. We did have a good discussion about the importance of family and acceptance afterward, which is always a win in my book. Curious to hear what others think!
