Okay, "Police Story" is WILD but...hear me out: Rom-Com potential?
Alright rom-com peeps, bear with me. I know, I know, "Police Story" (1985) is like, 99% insane stunts and Jackie Chan destroying everything in sight, but I'm seeing a tiny sliver of rom-com yearning buried deep, deep down in there. Seriously, think about it. He's assigned to protect Selina, the gangster's secretary, right? Classic forced proximity trope! And she clearly doesn't trust him at first, which, hello, hate-to-love setup! Okay, granted, the distrust is because he's a cop and she's involved with some very shady business, but still! The building blocks are there, people! I mean, imagine if they trimmed, like, 75% of the fight scenes (blasphemy, I know, but for the sake of my theory!) and added in some genuinely awkward, cute moments between Ka Kui and Selina. Instead of just running from bad guys hand-in-hand, they're like, tripping over each other trying to order noodles and getting into silly arguments about whether Pineapple buns are a dessert or a meal. Picture it! The final fight scene at the mall IS their "meet cute" version 2.0, so they realize how much they care for each other while beating up bad guys! I'm probably completely delusional, and I'm totally aware it makes little to no sense, but I swear, there's a rom-com buried beneath all the broken glass and flying fists. Chan has the comedic timing, Maggie Cheung is adorable and has a great character arc, and forced proximity is always a winner! I just think with a little tweaking (read: massive rewriting and re-editing), it could be a truly unique rom-com. I can already see someone writing the script to make this happen. Even with the stunts! Okay, I'm off to watch "You've Got Mail" to cleanse my palette. But seriously, tell me I'm not crazy? Or maybe I am? Either way, let's discuss!
