"Silverado" - Underrated Western Fun for Family Movie Night?
Okay, guys, so last night we had a family movie night and decided to throw it back with "Silverado" (1985). I'd seen it a bunch growing up, but the kids hadn't. I was a little nervous because, you know, it's a Western, so there's definitely some gun violence. But honestly, it's done in a pretty cartoonish way, if that makes sense? Like, nobody's getting graphically injured, and the 'bad guys' are SO obviously bad, it felt okay for my 10 and 12 year olds. Plus, Kevin Costner being all young and crazy is just... entertaining. The plot is simple enough: Four guys kinda accidentally team up to save a town from a corrupt sheriff (Brian Dennehy, who you just love to hate) and his gang. There are some tense moments, for sure – the scene where Emmett (Scott Glenn) gets his brother Jake (Costner) out of jail is gripping! And Danny Glover's character, Mal, dealing with racism in the old west is handled fairly well, though it's definitely something we talked about afterwards to make sure the kids understood the historical context. Honestly, the acting is great across the board, and the scenery is STUNNING. Makes you wanna go visit wherever they filmed! The shootout at the end is a bit long, but hey, it's a Western! My youngest was getting a bit fidgety, but overall, they both enjoyed it. It's definitely not a perfect movie, and it's a bit cheesy in parts (the music!), but it's a fun, relatively clean Western that the whole family can enjoy. I'd say it's way better than some of the more modern, grittier Westerns that are out there if you're looking for something family-friendly. Has anyone else watched "Silverado" recently? What did you think? Did your kids enjoy it? I'm always looking for more recommendations for our next family movie night!
