Cat's Eye (1985): That Ending Tho!

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Cat's Eye" (1985). I know, I know, I'm late to the party. Being a Stephen King anthology kinda guy, I was expecting something along the lines of "Creepshow" or "Tales from the Darkside." It's...different. The first two stories, "Quitters, Inc." with James Woods and "The Ledge" with Robert Hays, were both solid, classic King paranoia. The practical effects in "Quitters, Inc." were pretty gnarly for '85, especially the stuff they do to him! And Hays hanging off that building ledge gave me legit anxiety. I'm a sucker for that kind of suspense. But that last segment, "General," with Drew Barrymore...that was the one that really stuck with me. That little goblin thing! The stop-motion animation might look a little dated now, but I honestly thought it was super effective in creating a creepy, unsettling vibe. It felt like something out of a really twisted fairy tale. The sound design during the goblin's attacks too – all those high-pitched screeches and skittering noises? Chef's kiss. I wonder how many takes it took for Drew Barrymore to act frightened enough for that segment, she did a great job! I know some people find the cat framing device a little weak, and yeah, it's definitely just there to tie the stories together, but I kinda dug it. It gives the whole thing a thread of continuity, and the cat itself is pretty cute (even if it does seem to find trouble everywhere, haha). Overall, I'd say "Cat's Eye" is worth a watch if you're into King-esque horror with a bit of an 80s flair. It's not gonna win any awards for best screenplay, but it's got some genuinely creepy moments and the practical effects are pretty impressive for the time. Plus, stop motion is just cool, ok?
