Rewatching RETURN (1985) - Morbidly Obsessed, Anyone Else?
Okay, so I just revisited Norihiko Morinaga's RETURN (1985), that super-low-budget 8mm flick, and I'm still wrestling with it. As an editor, I'm always thinking about pacing and how a story feels, and this thing is... unsettlingly paced. Like, intentionally so? The extended shots of just... nothing, building this suffocating atmosphere, followed by bursts of almost manic energy. I love the rough edges, the amateur aesthetic is perfect. It's not trying to be anything it isn't. What REALLY got me thinking this time was the climax. The whole build-up to what happens felt weirdly inevitable. It's hard to talk about without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen it (and let's be honest, that's probably most people!), but the shot selection and the almost dreamlike quality they managed with so little – pure brilliance, in a perverse way, I guess. I was wondering if anyone else has watched it and felt the same way? Maybe i'm overthinking it. Specifically, did anyone else find the sound design jarringly effective? The silence in particular between the action is top notch. Is it some kind of comment about the banality of violence? Or am I giving it too much credit? Thoughts?
