Asterix vs. Caesar - Fashion faux pas or historically accurate?

Okay, so I just watched Asterix vs. Caesar (the 1985 version) and while the plot is, uh, something, I was mostly distracted by the costumes. Like, are we supposed to believe that all Gauls exclusively wear red and black striped pants? Because Obelix rocks them, don't get me wrong, but it's a look. Falbala's outfits were cute, but were they trying to make her seem 'other' because she wasn't in the standard uniform? And the Romans! Oh, the Romans. I know, I know, they're supposed to be these imposing figures, but the helmets just look ridiculous. Caesar's laurel wreath was probably the best fashion choice, honestly. I did like the practical aspects of the Roman armor though – you could tell they put some thought into how it moved. I wonder though, if the armor details were true to the time period or if they were embellished for the movie? But seriously, the color palettes! Gaul: Red, Black, White. Rome: Brown, Gold, Red. It's like a playground showdown in clothing form. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's definitely… a choice. I'm curious if anyone knows if there was a historical consultant on this film, or if they just went with what looked 'Roman' or 'Gaulish' in the 80s. Either way, it's a fun watch, especially if you're into unintentionally hilarious costume design. What do you guys think - intentional fashion statement or just bad costuming? Also, side note: whoever designed the druid's beard needs an award. It's a masterpiece of facial hair artistry. Ok, gotta go rewatch with a critical eye now!
