Runaway Train: Now THAT was a Thriller!

Alright, fellow cinephiles! Moviebuff_marc here, back at ya with another blast from the past. Just rewatched 'Runaway Train' (1985) last night, and man, it still holds up! Now, I can't for the life of me remember the director right off hand but who cares?! The story, the acting, the sheer tension...it's a ride. Jon Voight as Manny...wow. Talk about a powerhouse performance. He's like a caged animal, pure id unleashed. And Eric Roberts as Buck...that young, raw energy just bouncing off Voight's intensity. The whole setup – escaping from that bleak, snow-covered prison, then ending up on a train with no brakes?? It's the kind of high-concept craziness they just don't make anymore. Reminded me a bit of a modern-day 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre', but instead of gold, it's just survival, plain and simple. The ending...whew. That final scene with Voight...truly Shakespearean. Maybe even a little 'Moby Dick' in there with the whole man vs machine thing. And let's not forget Rebecca De Mornay, doing her best to keep up with the chaos. She's no pushover, which I appreciated. Although, and I'm being real here, I always thought her character was kind of extraneous, right? Like, they needed a damsel, but she's also kinda...there? Minor quibble. Overall, 'Runaway Train' is a solid 8/10 for me. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good thriller with some seriously impressive performances and a relentless pace. If you're looking for something to get your heart pumping, give it a watch. Tell me what you think!
