"Runaway Train" - Intense, but Maybe Not Exactly Family Movie Night Fare!
Okay, so last night after the kids were FINALLY in bed (seriously, the bedtime routine is never-ending!), I decided to watch "Runaway Train" (1985). I'd heard about it over the years, but never actually sat down to see it. Whew. What a ride! It's about these two escaped convicts, one played by Jon Voight (who is intense), and Eric Roberts, and they end up on a train that literally… well, runs away. Add to that, a railway worker, Sara, played by Rebecca De Mornay, gets trapped on board too. It's survival mode x100. Honestly, some of the violence and language is pretty rough, so definitely NOT one for the littles. Even for older teens, I'd say proceed with caution. But as a thriller, it's gripping. The Alaskan landscapes are stunning and really add to the feeling of isolation and desperation. Voight's performance is seriously captivating - he's totally believable as this hardcore, almost animalistic convict. The scene where he's yelling at the sky... chilling! The whole concept of being trapped on a runaway train with no brakes is terrifying, and the movie really does a good job of conveying that sense of utter helplessness. I think the ending is... well, I won't spoil it, but let's just say it's thought-provoking. Not sunshine and rainbows, for sure. Overall, "Runaway Train" is a powerful, if somewhat bleak, movie. Definitely not light and fluffy, but if you're in the mood for something suspenseful and intense, and the kids are nowhere near the TV, check it out. Just be prepared for a bit of a heavy watch! Did anyone else find the plot a little... 'out there' though? Like what are the odds of that happening? Still enjoyed it though!
