OMG you guys, "House" (1985) - Underrated Gem or Just Plain Bonkers?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "House" (1985) the other night. I'd heard whispers about it for ages, mostly about how cheesy-but-fun it is. And yeah, it totally lived up to that reputation! This divorced author guy, Roger Cobb, inherits his aunt's old house and BAM! Ghosts, demons, and a seriously creepy closet. I'm still trying to figure out what was going on there. What really got me was the tone. It's horror, for sure, especially when Roger's battling his Vietnam war demons (both literal and metaphorical, obvs!). But then it gets all silly and absurd, like the moment with the monster hand in the closet. I found myself laughing almost as much as I was jumping. Is that a good thing? I'm honestly not sure! But I did enjoy the ride. I liked how it felt like it wasn't taking itself too seriously, even when dealing with heavy stuff like loss and PTSD. It doesn't quite reach 'scary movie' top 10, but it was a welcome change to a lot of the ultra-serious horror movies out there. Does anyone else feel like it's a bit of a forgotten classic? I also thought William Katt did a pretty good job as Roger. He sold both the scared and the slightly unhinged sides of the character really well. I'm trying to figure out who directed this - I looked it up but didn't find the info. Who can inform me on that? Anyway, I think it's worth checking out if you're in the mood for something that's more of a horror-comedy cocktail. Just don't expect high art. Expect… well, expect a house full of surprises. And maybe hide your vacuum cleaner.
