The Quiet Earth: Late-Night Gem or Just Plain Weird?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Quiet Earth." Heard rumblings about it for years, a post-apocalyptic flick from '85. The premise is pretty killer: dude wakes up, everyone's GONE. Totally empty world. Reminded me a bit of a Twilight Zone episode stretched out, but with a touch of that early sci-fi dread, you know? Like, where did everyone GO? And what is he gonna DO about it? What I dug most was how it started, super eerie and unsettling. The guy, Zac Hobson, losing his mind trying to figure things out. The scene where he's dressing up in women's clothes and yelling at cardboard cutouts? Classic 80s 'losing it' montage, but it WORKS, really it does. And then, he finds other survivors, and you're like, "Okay, NOW what?" But the ending? Hoo boy! I'm still not entirely sure I understood that ending. All those colors and flashes, it felt like something Terry Gilliam might dream up after a bad curry night. Like a fever dream. It's not perfect, mind you. There are a few plot holes you could drive a DeLorean through. And some of the acting is...well, it's 80s sci-fi acting, let's just say that, lol. But overall, "The Quiet Earth" is a solid watch if you're into that thoughtful, what-does-it-ALL-mean kind of sci-fi. It's got that quirky, low-budget feel that a lot of those older genre films had, and that's part of its charm, ya know? Anyone else seen this one? What did you make of the ending? Am I totally off base with the Gilliam comparison? Let me know!
