Angel's Egg: Beautiful, but is it REALLY profound?

Okay, so I finally caved and watched Angel's Egg. Everyone acts like it's some deeply spiritual, mind-blowing experience. Visually? Gorgeous, no doubt. The crumbling cityscapes, the stark lighting... it's got that haunting, ethereal quality that anime sometimes nails. But honestly, after spending like 70 minutes staring at it, I'm left wondering if it's just pretty and not much else. Like, the girl and the soldier guy wander around, she clutches the egg for dear life, he pontificates about... stuff. Birds, maybe? Salvation? I honestly zoned out a few times. And that ending? What the hell was that ending even supposed to mean? I saw a bunch of fish eggs or something. If the point was 'life is cyclical' or some BS like that, I've seen it done way better (and less pretentiously). Don't get me wrong, I appreciate animation as an art form. The water colors are beautiful and it's one of the most beautiful anime ever made. But this just feels like visual masturbation with no real payoff. Am I missing something, or are people just afraid to admit that maybe, just maybe, they don't get it either and are just nodding along to sound intelligent? Maybe I'm just too dense for 'high art'. But give me a narrative I can actually follow, y'know? Show, don't just imply everything. I need a clearer symbolism. I wanted to like it, I really did. But I just came away feeling more confused than enlightened. And for a supposed masterpiece, that's kinda disappointing, IMO.
