Diving Deep on Angel's Egg: My Take on the Symbolism (Spoiler Alert!)
Okay, so I finally got around to Angel's Egg after hearing so much about it. Thing is, I went in totally blind. I knew it was Oshii Mamoru (director crush alert!) but I didn't even know what it was about. Wow. Just... wow. Visually stunning, obviously, but narratively? I'm still processing. Hence, this theory dive. My main takeaway is that the girl, and especially the egg, represent faith. Pure, unadulterated faith. The boy is a catalyst for questioning that faith. The way he's constantly asking about the egg, if it's real, if it will hatch...it's like he's embodying doubt and trying to force the girl to confront it. What REALLY cemented it for me was when he smashes the egg (SPOILER!). I think that's a direct representation of the crumbling of faith when met with harsh reality. Before, she blindly protected it, but after it's broken, she's forced to confront…nothingness. Then, of course, the whole ocean of eggs at the end? That's got to be the collective faith, or lack thereof, of humanity. The fact that she literally becomes part of this ocean, merging with all the other 'eggs', is super interesting. It's like saying that faith, in its purest form, is ultimately amorphous and unified. I know this is super heady stuff, but it's the only way I can make sense of it. I'm honestly not sure if I 'liked' the movie, per se. It didn’t feel like something to ‘like’. But it definitely provoked thought, in that Oshii way. It's staying with me, which is honestly what I'm looking for in these kinds of films. What are your interpretations? Am I totally off base here? Let me kwow!
