Vampire Hunter D (1985) - Still discovering things after like, a million watches!

Okay, so I'm Hannah, and I'm basically obsessed with Vampire Hunter D (the original, obviously). I swear, every time I watch it, I notice something new. Like, this time around, I was REALLY focusing on Doris's eyes. The way they shift after she's bitten? It's so subtle, but you can see the vulnerability mixed with this growing… otherness. It's phenomenal animation. And the music during those transformation scenes? Goosebumps, every single time. I also noticed how much D, like, doesn't say. He's such a man of few words, but his actions speak volumes, especially when he's protecting Doris. Sigh, D is such a mood. Something I've been thinking about lately, especially after seeing it again, is how bleak the future in Vampire Hunter D actually is. It's not just vampires versus humans; it's the aristocracy versus everyone else. Even the humans are kind of awful to each other. Nolt, for example, is just straight-up a jerk, and that whole posse seems like they would turn on each other in a heartbeat. I think it really adds to the desperation of Doris's situation. She's not just fighting a vampire; she's fighting a whole screwed-up system. I still think the whole hand-thing is kinda goofy, but it's memorably goofy, you know? And I gotta admit, seeing D slice through Meier Link's illusions never gets old. That scene is just pure animation gold. I think what really sticks with me after watching it so many times is the underlying loneliness of D's existence. He's this incredibly powerful being, but he's also completely isolated. I feel like there's still so much to unpack from this movie. I'm sure I'll discover even more during my next rewatch! Anyone else see new things every time they watch it? What are some of your favorite little details?
