Vampire Hunter D (1985) - More Than Just Fangs, Guys - A Theory!

Okay, so I just re-watched Vampire Hunter D (the OG one from '85, not the Bloodlust sequel - though I love that one too!), and I'm still reeling. The atmosphere, the brooding D himself, the sheer DESPERATION of Doris... it gets me every time! But this viewing, something really clicked for me and I wanted to get your thoughts. I think it's not just about vampires and monsters. I mean, yeah, that's the surface, but underneath? I think it's a metaphor for trauma and control. Think about it: Doris gets bitten, right? She's immediately losing control of her body, her destiny. It's like a violation, and she's rushing to D to take back that control. D, meanwhile, is also battling something inside him, that pull towards his vampire heritage. He's constantly fighting to stay on the side of humanity. The Miller brothers are also interesting, because they're trying to help Doris but often make things worse. They represent what happens when traumatized communities turn on each other--they're so desperate to do the right thing that they end up hurting the one they want to protect. It's messy and sad. Then there's Count Lee, who represents the ultimate form of control and legacy. He's old, powerful, and completely detached from human emotions. He wants to 'claim' Doris and basically rewrite her future. That scene where he's trying to seduce her? Super creepy precisely because it is about power, not love. Maybe I'm reaching, but it feels like all these characters are grappling with different aspects of being violated, controlled, and trying to reclaim their agency. What do you guys think? Am I totally off base, or does that trauma/control theory hold some water? Let me know your thoughts! Maybe I'm just extra emotional tonight, haha!
