Explorers: Is Wolfgang the Key to Everything?

Okay, so I just rewatched Explorers (1985 - you guys know the one, right? The kid-invented-space-travel flick) and I gotta throw out a theory I've been kicking around. We all focus on Ben's dreams, right? That's the initial catalyst. But what if Wolfgang isn't just comic relief and the 'muscle' alongside Darren Woods? What if he is actually the key to the alien communication, even more than Ben's sci-fi obsession? Think about it: Ben dreams the circuit board design. Darren's the mechanically gifted one who can actually build it. But Wolfgang...he's the one with the words. He's memorizing movie lines, mimicking sounds, absorbing all that pop culture noise. And the alien ship? It basically recreates that noise. It speaks to them in snippets of movies, cartoons, and what not. Maybe Wolfgang's brain, being a walking encyclopedia of Earth's media, was unconsciously sending the correct 'signals' to the aliens all along. Remember that scene where Wolfgang rattles off a string of film quotes, totally baffling the other two? What if the aliens were inadvertently picking up on that, deciphering it as some sort of complex, albeit nonsensical, greeting? It'd explain why the aliens seem so... confused, honestly. I dunno, maybe I'm reaching, but I just feel like Wolfgang's role is way more significant than just the 'funny friend.' He's a linguistic sponge, and I think that's secretly what made first contact possible. Plus, and this is a minor point I admit, River Phoenix's portrayal of Wolfgang is just amazing. He sells the character so well. It's a little over-the-top, sure, but it's also weirdly heartfelt. Seriously, tell me what you think -- am I totally off base on this or is there soemthing there?
