Real Genius: Still holds up... but that ending?!
Okay film fanatics, Priya here! I was revisiting some 80s classics the other night and decided to pop in "Real Genius" (1985). I hadn't seen it in ages, and it's still hilarious, right? Val Kilmer is absolute gold as Chris Knight, the slacker genius. I especially love the popcorn prank sequence – so inventive and absurd! And the whole dynamic between him and Mitch (Gabe Jarret) is just fantastic. It's also kinda cool seeing a movie where the "heroes" are super smart kids using their brains to fight back. Shows how much creativity these kids have and that anyone can be a genius. But I'm curious what you all think of the ending? Without giving too much away for anyone who hasn't seen it (shame on you!), it involves a lot of popcorn... like, a lot. It felt a little too over-the-top, even for a movie as deliberately goofy as this one. Maybe it's aged badly for me? Like, did it need to be that chaotic to get the point across? Don't get me wrong, the message about not letting corporations use science for destructive purposes is super relevant, even now. That concept defintely isn't outdated. But I think I was expecting something a little more... I don't know... subtle? Maybe I am just old and boring now. Ha! So, what do you guys think? Did the ending work for you? Or was it a bit too much? Any other favorite scenes or quotes from "Real Genius" that stand out to you? Let's discuss!
