"Real Genius" - Fashion Brains!

Okay, so I just rewatched "Real Genius" and I honestly forgot how much I love it! I mean, the plot is pure 80s zaniness, but the costumes, people! They're actually way more interesting than I remembered. Like, Chris Knight's whole vibe is just peak effortlessly cool, right? The t-shirts, the rumpled jackets... it's like he raided a thrift store and made it his own. I'm especially obsessed with the yellow polo shirt and the black blazer he wears when they're messing with Hathaway's office. So simple, so chic. And then you've got Mitch, who starts out all preppy in his little sweater vests (so cute!) but slowly gets corrupted by Chris's influence. The gradual change in Mitch's style reflects his character arc so well! The outfits are kinda messy, but they work for the character. Even Lazlo Hollyfeld's hermit chic is oddly compelling. You can't tell me that doesn't inform his entire vibe! However, the clothes really do highlight the difference between the fun, youthful genius and the villain. Hathaway seems to be wearing the same suit the entire movie! The same neutral business suit. It is so drab! Also, how about Susan Decker's look? She wears her work suit, but it actually has some style to it. It makes her a good foil to Hathaway, and makes her turn less surprising, if that makes sense. I'm not saying it's a fashion bible or anything, but "Real Genius" definitely deserves more credit for its costuming than it gets. It's subtle but effective in telling us about the characters and their growth (or lack thereof). Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just seeing things through fashion-tinted glasses? lol
