"Flesh + Blood" - Rutger Hauer is Insane...in a Good Way??
Okay, so I just finished watching "Flesh + Blood" (1985) and WOW. I had zero expectations going in, just saw it on some list of 'gritty' medieval movies. Rutger Hauer is absolutely unhinged in this. Like, I've seen him in "Blade Runner" and stuff, but here he's on another level. The whole movie is just so... brutal and unforgiving. Every character seems to be operating with a different set of morals or zero morals at all. There's a scene where Hawk (Hauer) basically claims Agnes as his 'prize' after they take the castle, and it's seriously disturbing but also... weirdly compelling? I mean, she eventually seems to almost develop feelings for him, even though he's a complete psychopath. Is that Stockholm Syndrome or something else entirely? And why is everyone so chill with rape? Like, its a medieval film so I know it has happened, but it's so frequent and casual in this movie that its beyond excessive. And what was with the whole religious subplot with the plague? It felt kinda tacked on at times, but then again, it created such a bleak and depressing atmosphere. I mean, everyone is dying from the war and the plague so it seems like the world is against them from the start. Was it necessary to the plot, or just extra layering to make it all even more disturbing? Also, that ending was kinda abrupt, right? Felt like there could've been another 15 minutes to really wrap things up. Overall, I was impressed by how different it was from the typical 'knights in shining armor' medieval stuff. This was down and dirty, and the visuals were grimy, but it really got under my skin. I am not sure how I feel about it, but what did everyone else think, especially about the Agnes/Hawk relationship? Was she just surviving, or did she genuinely feel something for him?
