Prizzi's Honor: Nicholson and Turner, But Did It Really Work?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Prizzi's Honor after hearing about it for years. Nicholson is, well, Nicholson. He's got that dopey charm and plays Charley Partanna like he's a golden retriever who just happens to whack people for a living. Kathleen Turner is magnetic, no question. But something about the whole thing felt...off? Maybe it's the pacing. It felt strangely slow at times, almost like they were deliberately dragging out scenes to emphasize the absurdity. Did anyone else get that sense? My biggest issue, though, is the chemistry. Or lack thereof. Nicholson and Turner are both fantastic actors individually, but I just didn't buy them as a couple. Maybe it's because the whole romance is based on such a bizarre premise – two stone-cold killers falling in love at first sight after witnessing a hit? It felt forced, almost like the film was trying too hard to be quirky and failed to create a believable connection. And that ending! Talk about a downer. I understand it's supposed to be darkly comedic, but it just left me feeling a bit empty. Was it supposed to be funny? Because I mostly just felt bad for Charley, even though he's a monstrous figure. I mean, he's completely, utterly manipulated by Irene. Which, I guess, is the point? I'm still processing it, honestly. So, am I missing something? Is there a layer of brilliance here that sailed right over my head? I'm genuinely curious to hear what others thought. Maybe I went in with the wrong expectations, but I came away feeling a little underwhelmed. Especially given the talent involved.
