D.A.R.Y.L.: Is This Rom-Com Adjacent, or Am I Just Delusional?
Okay, so I just re-watched D.A.R.Y.L. (don't judge, it was on cable!), and I'm having a crisis. Hear me out: Daryl, the super-smart robot kid, ends up with a foster family, right? And while it's obviously not a romantic relationship, the connection he forms with Joyce and Andy (his foster parents) is SO intense and emotional. Like, when he's first learning and trying to be 'normal,' it's kinda cute, in a weird 'Pinocchio trying to be a real boy' sort of way. Am I CRAZY to see hints of rom-com tropes here? Maybe it's just because I've been mainlining Nora Ephron movies lately, but I swear... And the scene where he's playing that impossible video game to save Andy? C'mon, that's practically a meet-cute gone wrong, just with more joysticks and governmental conspiracy! Plus, the whole 'fish out of water' thing totally works. He's literally an alien trying to blend in. Okay, so maybe it's more sci-fi with a family drama sprinkled in, but I'm convinced there's a spark of something rom-com adjacent lurking beneath the surface. Or maybe I just need to lay off the wine and watch something actually romantic. Though, let's be real, anyone who can hack a jet fighter with a joystick IS somewhat dreamy... Anyone else see what I'm talking about here? Or am I totally alone on this island of robot-family-romantic-comedy-ish-ness? Please tell me I'm not entirely insane! I might need a Netflix intervention if I start shipping D.A.R.Y.L. with anyone (except maybe his best friend Turtle, those two had some seriously good chemistry lol).
