Just One of the Guys: Totally 80s, Totally Confusing (But I Dig It)
Okay, so I finally watched "Just One of the Guys." I know, I'm late to the party. But hear me out! The plot is...well, you probably know, girl dresses as a boy to get a fair shot at winning a writing contest. Gender politics aside (which, honestly, this movie kind of glosses over in a way that's both charmingly naive and slightly infuriating), the fashion is where it's at. I mean, Terry's transformation! From those frilly dresses (ugh) to the baggy jeans and that perfectly messy, "I didn't try at all" hair...it's peak '80s cool. I was seriously tempted to go find a similar denim jacket. I also LOVE the way they styled her when she's 'trying' to be butch versus when she's just hanging out as Terry-as-Terry, if that makes sense? Subtle stuff, but it's there. And then there's Rick Morehouse, the dreamboat! I mean, I know it's kinda problematic now, the whole "falling for someone who's pretending to be someone else" thing. But come on, Jonathan Silverman in those oversized shirts and those eyes! He's adorable. Plus, his character's whole artistic vibe? Chef's kiss. Some outfits seemed a little TOO coordinated, even for the '80s (like the matching pink outfits at the dance, yikes), but overall, the costuming really sells the high school setting and the characters' personalities. The whole thing is so wonderfully cheesy and predictable, but I was totally invested. Did anyone else notice that they never really explained what happened to her old hair? Like, where did all that volume go?! Anyway, a fun watch, even if it requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief. Definitely recommend for a nostalgic trip...just maybe don't take it too seriously, haha.
