Okay, "Kiss of the Spider Woman"... Not what I expected!
Alright, so I watched "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985) last night. Someone in another thread said it was 'powerful' and 'thought-provoking'. I went in expecting some kind of gritty prison break flick, maybe with some cool fight choreography. What I GOT was... well, not that. I mean, it's a prison movie, sure, but with hardly ANY action, except for some stuff that Molina, this very imaginative cellmate, narrates out loud. And the only cool part of that is when it becomes a fantasy sequence of a Nazi with the woman he loves. Look, I'm not gonna lie, it's definitely...different. William Hurt is excellent as Molina, that much I can say. The character is complex, ya know? He's a window dresser, super into old movies, and he's in jail for 'corruption of a minor.' Then there is Raul Julia, he's Valentin, a political activist who acts tough but is a bit of a softie deep down. Their conversations are actually pretty engaging, especially as they kinda start to understand each other. The director guy really nails the claustrophobia of the cell which I guess is what they were going for since the whole movie takes place in the prison. I guess my problem is just that it didn't really scratch my itch for a good action film. The 'spider woman' stuff only occurs as some fantasy sequence from Molina's imagination. I mean, there's torture and a lot of emotional tension (especially towards the end when Valentin starts to get sick), but it's not what I usually go for. I guess I can appreciate the acting and the story they're trying to tell, it's just, uh, not really my genre. If you're wanting guns, fights, explosions... just look elsewhere. If you want to think a lil more, it might do the trick for you. Maybe I just need to rewatch it with a different mindset. Anyone else see this movie and have some thoughts? Maybe I missed something...
