Is 'The Sure Thing' Low-Key Rob Reiner?

Okay, so I know Rob Reiner didn't direct 'The Sure Thing' (it was Robner Mandell, right?). But seriously, has anyone else ever watched it and thought, like, this feels like a Reiner flick? Hear me out. Think of it as a spiritual prequel to 'When Harry Met Sally...' Just me? I'm deep in my filmography phase rn, bouncing around directors. Watched Reiner's stuff backward recently, and then popped this on because I was in a 80s mood. The whole 'opposite attract' thing is textbook Reiner (before he got all serious with 'A Few Good Men,' obv). Plus, John Cusack's Gib is basically a younger, slightly dumber version of Harry. And the road trip format? Reminds me of the structure thing Reiner does, creating an inevitability to the love story. I mean, yeah, it's more cartoony and '80s cheese, less 'intellectual', but it's got that same underlying charm. And the soundtrack? The constant bickering that slowly becomes affection? The over-the-top characters they meet along the way that are clearly there as a commentary on the main duo's personalities? It's all building to a point. Like, even the ending, with Alison ditching the 'sure thing' for Gib... it's a less nuanced version of Sally choosing Harry! I bet Reiner had some uncredited involvement. Maybe I'm reaching, but I'm convinced there's some kind of connection here. Maybe Mandell was trying to be Reiner? Or maybe it's just the era and the whole 'rom-com' thing. Either way, I'm sticking to this theory! What do you guys think? Am I crazy?
