Is 'The Sure Thing' secretly a Horror Movie... About High School?

Okay, hear me out, guys. I know The Sure Thing (1985) isn't officially horror. It's a rom-com, blah blah blah. But I've been rewatching it, and I swear, underneath the John Cusack charm, there's a low-key terrifying examination of social anxiety and the pressure to conform in high school. I mean, think about it: Gib is basically running from the 'monster' of ending up like everyone else in his boring town. The 'sure thing' promises validation and acceptance, but at what cost? It's like a Faustian bargain where your soul is just... your individuality. Seriously, the whole road trip is Gib's descent into a different kind of hell. Every encounter, every awkward dinner party, is a mini jump scare of realizing he's losing pieces of himself. And Alison is his unwilling partner, acting as the voice of reason trying to drag him back from the edge. She's basically the 'final girl' trying to save him from becoming the cliche he fears most! The scene where he's practicing 'cool' conversation in the mirror? More terrifying than any Freddy Krueger flick, because it's REAL. We've ALL been there, right? Maybe it's a stretch, but I think the fear of becoming a 'townie' -- of settling for mediocrity and losing your unique spark -- is a primal fear for a lot of people. And The Sure Thing taps into that in a way that's way more unsettling than given credit for. It's a slow-burn psychological horror about the horrors of fitting in! What do you guys think? Am I totally off my rocker or are there some creepy 'under-the-skin' vibes here? BTW, who directed this again? My notes are scrawled out! Also, is it just me, or does the constant threat of being stranded in the middle of nowhere with zero cell service add to the dread? shivers Just a thought. Let's discuss!
