One Red Shoe: More Like... One Big Mess? (My Thoughts)
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Man with One Red Shoe" (1985), and...whew. Where do I even begin? I'd heard it was supposed to be a comedy classic, but honestly, I spent more time cringing than laughing. Maybe it's just aged poorly? I mean, Tom Hanks is always watchable, even in questionable roles, but the whole premise just felt so…obvious. The 'mistaken identity' trope has been done so much better elsewhere. I think part of the problem is the script. It just felt so clunky and predictable. I kept waiting for some clever twist or witty line that never really came. Anyone else feel the same? What really bugged me was how unlikeable everyone was! Dabney Coleman as the Deputy Director? Total caricature. And the whole 'using Lauren Hutton to get close to Hanks' character' subplot was just…icky. It felt manipulative and forced, even for a comedy. I get it, it's supposed to be absurd, but it just wasn't funny absurd. More like awkward absurd. I did chuckle a couple of times – there's a scene with a guy trying to tail Hanks in a ridiculous disguise that got me - but overall, it felt like a lot of wasted potential. I'm a sucker for screwball comedies, and I was really hoping this would be one of those hidden gems, but it just wasn't. Maybe my expectations were too high? I will say, the 80s style is on point, and Hanks' dancing is... well, something to behold. It's definitely memorable, even if not for the right reasons! Am I being too harsh? Has anyone else seen this recently and actually enjoyed it? I'm genuinely curious to hear other opinions. Maybe I just need to watch it again with lower expectations and a stronger drink? Haha! I'm always up for revisiting a film (especially with fellow movie nerds). Let me know your thoughts!
