Okay, Ghoulies is Officially...Weird. (In a Fun Way?)
So, I finally gave in and watched "Ghoulies" (1985). I went in expecting a killer toilet movie, and...well, I got that, but it's also so much more bizarre than I thought it would be. First of all, Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis). Talk about a passive protag! He's basically just pushed around by destiny and some funky chanting. And then he's all of a sudden summoning demons in his basement. Like, where'd he learn all this stuff?? The acting is...well, it's a low-budget horror movie. But I'm kind of hooked on how earnest everyone is, even when the special effects are making me giggle. The Ghoulies themselves are kinda cute-creepy, especially the green one. But seriously, the plot is all over the place. It's like they threw a bunch of occult ideas into a blender and hoped for the best. Does anyone else feel that way? My main problem is with the girlfriend character, Rebecca (Lisa Pelikan). She gets sidelined hard. She's basically just there to be scared and then, you know... kinda possessed? The actress deserved better, honestly. I think there was potential there to make her a more active character than just a victim. Honestly, I think the movie could have benefitted from more focus on her perspective. Overall, "Ghoulies" is a strange little flick. It's not going to win any awards, and it's definitely not high art. But it's got a certain charm to it, probably the schlock factor. I get why it's a cult classic -- it's just so uniquely bonkers. Would I recommend it? Eh, maybe with a few drinks and a group of friends ready to laugh at some questionable choices. I'm glad I watched it just to say that I did.
