Three Men and a Baby... Wait, The French One First!
Okay so, I was flipping through channels last night, you know, the usual 2 AM doomscrolling, and stumbled upon this movie called "Three Men and a Cradle" (1985). Now, before you go screaming 'Ted Danson diaper change!' at me, this is the original French version that the '87 American flick was, like, heavily inspired by. I actually kinda dug it? I mean, it's super 80s, obvs. Big hair, questionable fashion choices... but the story held up surprisingly well. I thought it would be awful and I was kind of surprised that I didn't turn it off halfway through. The premise is the same: three bachelors – Jacques, Pierre, and Michel – living the carefree Parisian life get a baby foisted on them. But the French version is...different. It feels less slapstick-y, more about the guys actually struggling with the responsibility and the emotional weight of it all. There’s this one scene where Michel's especially having a hard time and he ends up breaking down, and it felt more grounded than I expected. Also, the "drug smuggling" subplot in the American one? Here, it's tied to Jacques' job and feels more relevant to his character. Plus there's a scene where the baby pees on one of the guys and that was genuinely hilarious... so you know, not all highbrow art here haha. I was also trying to figure out who directed it. Apparently it's Coline Serreau, which is cool. I wish she directed the American remake. It's not like, a perfect film. It's dated and kinda cheesy, but I think it's a fun watch, especially if you're already familiar with the American version. It's interesting to see how they translated the story for a different audience. I almost perfered the French one. Anyway, just thought I'd share my late-night musings. Anyone else seen this? Thoughts? Is it weird that I actually kinda liked it more than the American one? Maybe I'm just in a euro-cinema mood. Now I'm thinking of trying to find "Cousin, Cousine." Hmmm...
