Santa Claus: The Movie - Patch is REALLY the villain?!
Okay, fellow cinephiles! Priya here, back with another deep dive into...Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). Yes, I know, not exactly Kurosawa, haha. But hear me out! I watched this again recently, mostly for nostalgia, but something struck me. We're all supposed to hate B.Z. (John Lithgow is amazing, btw), but shouldn't we be looking closer at Patch? Think about it: Patch messes up everything. He's supposed to be this super-elf toy maker, but his 'amazing' idea of making toys instantly just creates a load of dangerous, exploding candy. He then runs away to New York, falls in with B.Z., and actively helps create a product designed to destroy Christmas spirit! Sure, he has a redemption arc, and Dudley Moore is adorable, but the sheer scale of his initial failure is almost cartoonishly evil! B.Z, while greedy, is just exploiting a situation Patch created. It's like Patch unleashed a rogue AI on the world, then felt bad about it. Remember that scene where he first shows Santa the instant toys? Look at his face! Is that pride, or something more...sinister? I'm not saying Patch is some deliberate, moustache-twirling baddie, but maybe the writers were subtly hinting at the dangers of unchecked ambition? Or maybe I'm just projecting because I had a dream I accidentally created sentient gingerbread men who demanded world domination after eating too much cinnamon. You guys tell me! Am I going too far down the rabbit hole, or is there something genuinely unsettling about Patch's trajectory in the movie? I wanna hear your thoughts!
