Santa Claus Is a Stinker: Okay, I'm Offended, But Also... Laughing?
Okay, so I just finished watching "Santa Claus Is a Stinker", which frankly feels like a fever dream I had after eating bad cheese. Two words: darkly hilarious. I went in expecting some cheesy '80s Christmas movie and got... this. The plot is totally bonkers, right? Two complete weirdos running a suicide hotline on Christmas Eve, and then a parade of equally messed-up people shows up. There's Josette, the pregnant woman, her awful boyfriend Félix, and then there's Katia – who, let's just say, adds a lot to the chaos. Honestly, I didn't know if I should be laughing or calling a therapist. The scene with the poisoned "Christmas log" cake? Unforgivable... but I choked on my water. And the whole storyline with Pierre and Thérèse's increasingly unhinged behavior is just... wow. Like, they start out well-meaning, trying to help everyone, but quickly devolve into a state of absolute madness. And let's not forget Mr. Lebœuf... poor guy just wanted a decent Christmas Eve! I'm not sure how to rate this one. It's definitely NOT for everyone. It's offensive, it's ridiculous, it's sometimes hard to watch... but I also can't deny that I was entertained. I'm not sure I'd watch it again anytime soon, though. Maybe in, like, five years when I've forgotten most of the details... or blocked them out entirely. Anyone else seen this and have similar confused feelings? Am I going to hell for laughing? Final thought: The characters are so over-the-top, and the situations are so absurd, that it kind of transcends just being a bad movie? If you can handle some seriously dark humor and don't mind feeling a little bit morally compromised afterwards, give it a shot. But don't say I didn't warn you!
