Porky's Revenge...Okay, But Where's the Score?!

Alright guys, HughesReviews here. Look, I know Porky's Revenge (1985) isn't exactly high art, but I finally sat down and watched it...mostly to see if there was anything soundtrack-wise worth noting. Honestly? Slim pickings. The movie itself is...well, it's Porky's. The plot is pretty much as you'd expect. Porky's back, the guys are trying to graduate, there's some basketball shenanigans involved...it's a formula at this point. What's frustrating is the missed opportunity. This movie is drowning in 50s nostalgia. They could have leaned HARD into some killer source music, maybe even gotten a composer to do a really retro-sounding score. Instead, what we get is…forgettable. There's some generic '80s synth-pop interspersed with the diegetic music, but nothing that stands out. One kinda funny scene I guess is when Mickey gets hypnotized, the music kinda hints at the ridiculousness there, but overall it's pretty standard stuff. Seriously, imagine if they'd gotten someone like Elmer Bernstein (he'd passed by then--I know, I know) to channel his inner Man With the Golden Arm for the basketball scenes, or even something akin to Alex North's work on A Streetcar Named Desire. We could have had gold! As it stands, the music is just there. It provides a backdrop, but it doesn't elevate anything. It doesn’t even particularly distract, so I guess there's that? I'm not saying this movie NEEDED a complex score to be good or anything, but it could have been so much MORE, y'know? So, soundtrack fans, unless you're a completist, you can probably skip this one. The movie itself is…a Porky's movie. If you like that sort of thing, you'll probably find something to enjoy. But for me, the soundtrack was a real letdown. Back to the crates!
