Stand By Me: "You guys are my best friends!"
Okay, I just re-watched Stand by Me and, man, it STILL gets me. I know, I know, everyone loves it. But it's more than just nostalgia for me. It’s the raw, unfiltered friendship. Especially when Gordie's going through it after his brother dies, and Chris just gets him with that 'Your brother was a good writer, Gordie. He thought you were different. He liked you a lot.' Ugh. Hits me right in the feels every time. I wish I had a Chris Chambers in my life, know what I mean? Someone who fights for you, even when you're being a dumbass. And the train dodging scene? Classic! Teddy almost getting flattened because he's psycho enough to stand his ground? Insane. It's such a perfectly captured moment of reckless teenage bravado. Plus Kiefer Sutherland as Ace Merrill is just…chef's kiss. "Suck my fat one, you cheap dime-store hood!" Who TALKS like that anymore?!?! This is why I live for cinema, folks. But for real tho, the whole “seeing the dead body” thing takes a backseat, doesn't it? It's really about those four boys confronting their fears, their insecurities, and each other. Vern is a little...much, but he's loyal. And Gordie finally gaining confidence? It’s powerful. Plus, I just found out Rob Reiner directed it! No wonder it's so good, jeez! So, what are your favorite Stand by Me moments? Anyone else tear up when adult Gordie is writing at the end? Don't lie, I know I'm not alone! 'I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, did you?' Gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
