Platoon - Holy Crap, That Sound Design!

Alright, so I just re-watched Platoon for like, the tenth time. And I gotta say, even though it's super intense and gritty, the thing that always gets me is the SOUND. I'm a big tech guy, always messing with audio setups, and the way they built the soundscape for that movie is just... incredible. Seriously underrated, IMO. Like, think about the scene when they're ambushed in the jungle, those first few shots ring out and the sound of the foliage being torn apart, the screams... it feels so chaotic and real. Anyone else notice how the sounds almost seem to come from everywhere? It's not just directional, it feels like you're in the ambush. That's some serious sound design wizardry. Or even the quieter moments, the constant buzzing of insects or the distant rumble of artillery... it all adds to the feeling of unease and dread. Did they use binaural recording techniques back then? I'm curious about the specific tech they used. And then there's the music. Adagio for Strings, right? Such a haunting piece and it hits so damn hard when it comes up. It kinda feels like a gut punch when you realize the toll that war takes... Anyone have any insights on the sound mixing specifically? I'd love to know more about how they created that oppressive sonic environment. It's what elevates Platoon from "another war film" to something truly visceral, you know?
