Okay, "Platoon" - Thoughts on the Grime Chic Aesthetic?

Just watched "Platoon" – woah. Heavy stuff. Obviously, the story is intense, but as someone who really pays attention to visuals, I was struck by the, uh... I guess the costumes? Or lack thereof, haha. Like, it's not exactly fashion, but the whole vibe of utterly destroyed fatigues, the dirt caked on everything – it's a look. It's almost got this unintentional '90s grunge thing going on, but, y'know, amplified by actual war and misery. I kept thinking about the contrast, especially with Charlie Sheen's character, Taylor. You see him at the beginning, relatively clean-cut, somewhat hopeful. Then, by the end, he's practically indistinguishable from the landscape, totally consumed by the filth and the violence. That whole visual transformation is super powerful, and the fact that it's all conveyed through the clothes (or lack of 'cleanness' thereof) is fascinating. And Willem Dafoe? Okay, Elias's headband and bandana situation was actually kind of cool, TBH. I know, I know, it's probably a functional thing, but it added a certain... something. Maybe a touch of rebel spirit? I don't know. The whole thing is so raw and unglamorous, which I guess is the point, but it's definitely stuck with me. Anybody else notice similar things about the visual storytelling in this movie, or am I totally overthinking some very dirty army clothes? lol.
