"The Fly" (1986) - Ew, but also, Wow?

Okay, international film buffs, lemme tell you about "The Fly" (1986). I know Cronenberg isn't exactly Bollywood, but hear me out! I finally got around to watching it and... yikes. Seriously disturbing stuff. I mean, the whole concept of Seth Brundle basically merging with a fly because of a teleportation malfunction is just inherently gross. The practical effects are next-level, but like, in a "I might throw up a little" kind of way. Jeff Goldblum is amazing, though. You can really see him going from this kind of quirky genius to... well, a fly-man. The gradual transformation is SO well done, but also REALLY makes you feel sorry for him. What I found most compelling wasn't even the body horror (though there's plenty of that!). It was the tragic love story between Seth and Veronica. Goldblum and Geena Davis have amazing chemistry, and you genuinely feel that the relationship is disintegrating along with Seth’s body. That scene where he shows her his fingernails falling off? I physically recoiled. It's such a sad and messed-up story, and Cronenberg does an incredible job exploring the themes of disease, identity, and ultimately, loss. It's funny because, on the surface, it's a straight-up horror movie, but beneath all the goo and buzzing, there is some really profound storytelling happening. I wouldn't pop this one in for a lighthearted night, but if you're into films that make you think (and maybe squirm a little), it's definitely worth checking out. Also, anyone else think Brundlefly's philosophical musings were strangely profound, even when he was all…fly-like? Just me? Anyway, let me know your thoughts! What did you think of the film, and does it hold up today? Personally, I'm still processing the image of Brundlefly eating that sugar cube. Eesh. I need something cheerful to watch now...maybe a nice Kurosawa film?
